Adjust Servings
Ingredients
- 2 large boneless chicken breasts
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion sliced
- Salt
- Pepper
- Onion powder
- Garlic powder
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- 14.5 ounces of beef broth
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Add olive oil to a large skillet and heat over medium heat
- Slice each chicken breast horizontally, so that each piece is equal in size.
- Season both sides of the chicken with salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder. (use as much or as little as you prefer)
- Cook the chicken in the skillet until the internal temp reaches 165 degrees. Cooking time will vary based on the size of your chicken breast, but this step should take roughly 15 minutes. (7 minutes per each side)
- Remove chicken from skillet and reduce heat to lowest setting.
- Add 4 tablespoons butter, allow to melt.
- Add a small splash of beef broth and scrape the bottom of the skillet with a spatula to deglaze the seasoning.
- Add sliced onion, occasionally stirring until they turn golden brown. Once, golden brown add minced garlic and allow to cook for an additional 1-2 minutes. This step should take around 20-30 minutes. Be careful not to burn the onion.
- Add flour and combine with the onions. Once well combined, allow flour/onion mixture to cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, constantly stir until gravy starts to simmer and thicken.
- Add chicken to skillet, cover each piece with onions and gravy, finally top with shredded cheese.
- Add to 350-degree preheated oven, just long enough for the cheese to melt.
- Enjoy!
Notes
- If you do not have mozzarella cheese on hand, you can use provolone or any type of “pizza blend” cheese as a substitute.
- If you prefer a thicker or thinner consistency of gravy, you can add or minus 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour. More flour= thicker, Less flour= thinner.
- If you do not want to heat your oven just to melt the cheese, you can cover the skillet with a lid and the steam will melt the cheese.

Looks amazing! We love French Onion everything! One thing though Miss Katie, worchestershire is pronounced “WORST-er-sheer” not “wash-your-sister”. 🙂
