These Hamburger Balls & Onion Gravy were a staple in my home growing up. My mom made them on a weekly basis and to this day, I never get tired of eating them. They are essentially hamburger steaks rolled into bite size pieces. That makes this recipe especially great for children who are picky eaters and prefer finger foods.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- ½ yellow onion, sliced
- 1 packet Lipton onion soup mix
- 14.5 ounce beef broth
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon onion Powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
How To Make Hamburger Balls & Onion Gravy
To make these delicious and easy Hamburger Balls & Onion Gravy, start by adding ground beef, ½ packet of Lipton onion soup mix, onion powder, garlic powder and pepper to a mixing bowl. Then use your hands to knead and combine the seasonings into the meat. Then pinch off small amounts and roll the meat in 1 ½ inch size balls. 1 pound of ground beef should make roughly 12 hamburger balls.
Then in a large skillet over medium- high heat add the hamburger balls and cook them 2-3 minutes on each side. This step should take 10-15 minutes depending on the size of the balls. Make sure not to overcrowd the skillet so that you have room to roll them around while cooking. Once they are fully cooked, remove them from skillet and set aside.
Next, add the sliced onions to the skillet and allow to them to sauté for 5-10 minutes or until soft and slightly golden brown. Then add flour and whisk it together with the grease left over from the beef. Once it develops a paste consistency, allow the roux to cook for 2-3 minutes then add the beef broth and remainder of Lipton Onion Soup Mix. Stir constantly until well combined. Bring the gravy to a simmer and allow it to thicken.
Add the hamburger balls into skillet and cover them with onion gravy. This recipe pairs very well with any potato style side dish. I hope y’all enjoy these Hamburger Balls & Onion Gravy.
