How To Make Biscuits & Sausage Gravy Casserole

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, toss in that breakfast sausage and cook it ’til you don’t see any more pink. Then, turn the heat down low and add some butter. Once it’s all melted, sprinkle in the flour and stir it around until it’s good and mixed in. Let that roux cook for a couple minutes, stirring every now and then, then pour in 2 cups of milk. Season the gravy with 2 teaspoons of Dan-O’s Original Seasoning and stir it until it starts to simmer and thickens up.

Tip and Tricks for The Best Breakfast Casserole

  • Make Ahead: Assemble the casserole the night before, cover with plastic wrap, and store it in the fridge. The next morning, simply bake and enjoy!
  • Add Vegetables: For extra flavor and nutrients, mix in diced bell peppers, onions, or spinach with the sausage layer.
  • Switch up the cheese: While cheddar is a classic for this casserole dish, you can also try pepper jack cheese for a spicy kick or mozzarella for a creamier texture.
  • Buttery Biscuits: I always recommend choosing the “Buttery Grands!” brand of biscuits for best results.

How To Store Leftovers

  • In the fridge: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven until warmed through.
  • In the freezer: This casserole freezes well. Wrap individual portions in plastic wrap and store in the freezer for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

FAQ

  • Can I use turkey sausage instead of pork sausage? Absolutely! Turkey sausage is a great option if you’re looking for a lighter alternative, and it works beautifully in this gravy recipe.
  • How do I keep the biscuits from getting soggy? To keep the biscuits fluffy, make sure the casserole dish is not overcrowded with gravy. The egg mixture and gravy should just cover the top of the biscuits without oversaturating them.
  • How long should I bake the casserole? The total baking time is around 35-40 minutes, but you may need to add extra minutes if the casserole hasn’t set in the middle. Cover with aluminum foil if the top of the biscuits is browning too quickly. Also, if you made this the night before and its been sitting in the fridge all night, you may need to bake it for little longer.
