How to make hamburger hashbrown casserole
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add ground beef and diced onion then cook until there is no pink visible within the meat. Drain off any excess grease and season with onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper.
Pour the hash browns, cooked ground beef, can of cream of mushroom soup, and French onion dip, and 1 cup of shredded cheese into a 9×13 baking dish then stir to combine. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top of the casserole and bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes until the top is slightly golden brown and cheese is melted.
Variations
- Use different soups- If you don’t like cream of mushroom soup, try using cream of chicken soup instead. This will give a slightly different flavor but it will still be a delicious casserole nonetheless!
- Add extra veggies- If you prefer the loaded version of recipes, try adding diced bell peppers, mushrooms, and finish by topping it off with green onions.
- Add more meat- Throw in some diced ham to really take it up a notch! This is a great addition if you are planning to serve this dish as the main course
- Add some crunch- Top it with crushed Ritz crackers or crushed cheese flavored potato chips to add a crunch! This would make the recipe very similar to funeral potatoes!
Can I make this casserole ahead of time?
- Yes! You can make this casserole the day before you plan to cook it. The main thing to remember is make sure the hash browns are thawed prior to making the dish. If you don’t allow the hash browns to thaw, you will end up with excess water in the baking dish. Once you prepare the casserole, cover it with Saran Wrap and store it in the refrigerator prior to baking.
How do I store leftover casserole?
- This is one of those recipes where it might just taste better the next day! You can store leftover casserole in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. When you’re ready to eat, just reheat it in the microwave and enjoy all of the cheesy goodness!
Top Tip
- Please make sure you are using sour cream based French onion dip. The jarred French onion dip you find in the chip isle of the grocery store will not work for this recipe.
