How To Make Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil and chopped onions. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the onions soften, then add in the lean ground beef and cook until no pink remains. If there’s any excess grease, drain it off. Season the beef with seasoned salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Once seasoned, set the beef mixture aside.
In the same skillet, reduce the heat to low and add butter. Once the butter has melted, sprinkle in the flour and stir to form a roux. Stir constantly for 2-3 minutes, allowing the roux to cook, then whisk in the whole milk until the roux dissolves. Add shredded cheese, stirring until it fully melts and the sauce thickens. (At this point, you can remove some sauce for dipping if desired.)
Return the ground beef to the skillet and stir to combine the cheesy sauce and beef.
In a separate skillet over medium heat, spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the inside of each brioche bun or hoagie roll, and toast them in the skillet until golden brown. Once the buns are toasted, scoop the Philly cheesesteak sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom half of each toasted bun. Serve and enjoy!
Tip and Tricks for The Best Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe
- Customize The Cheese: For a classic Philly cheesesteak flavor, go with my homemade cheddar cheese sauce or if you want to skip on the gooey cheese sauce, use white American cheese.
- Toasted Buns: Don’t skip toasting the buns. It adds a delicious crunch that balances out the juicy ground beef and cheese sauce mixture.
How To Store Leftovers
- Refrigerator: Store leftover beef mixture in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Reheating: Warm the beef mixture in a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat or in the microwave until heated through.
- Freezing: Freeze the beef mixture (without the buns) in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.
- Storing buns: Keep leftover toasted buns wrapped in aluminum foil at room temperature for up to 1 day. Re-toast in the oven or skillet before serving.
- Assemble later: To avoid soggy buns, store the meat mixture and buns separately, and assemble when ready to eat.
