Why you’ll love this recipe

This cheeseburger casserole is a family favorite in my home. It features a delicious cheesy meat mixture topped with super crispy french fries and a homemade burger sauce. This dish can serve as an all-in-one meal so you don’t even have to worry about preparing a side dish. It’s also a kid friendly recipe so its perfect for any picker eaters you may have at home.

Ingredients to make Cheeseburger French Fry Casserole

  • Lean ground beef– I always use lean beef because it has less fat and produces less grease to need to drain off.
  • Frozen French fries– I recommend using shoestring fries so the topping is ultra crispy. However, tater tots may be used as a substitute.
  • Cream of mushroom soup
  • Cheddar cheese soup
  • Yellow onion
  • Minced garlic– You may also use minced fresh garlic cloves (cut amount in half if you decide to do so)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Salt & black pepper

 Burger Sauce Ingredients

  • Mayonnaise
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Pickle juice
  • Dehydrated onions
  • Black pepper

How to make Cheeseburger French Fry Casserole

Preheat the air fryer and cook the French fries per the package instructions until they are golden brown and crispy. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and diced onions then brown the meat until no pink is visible. Add minced garlic and combine with the cooked ground beef, then cook for an additional 30-45 seconds. Season with onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Drain off any excess grease. Add can of cheddar cheese soup and cream of mushroom soup and stir to combine.

Variations

  • Add your favorite burger toppings- You may add any of your favorite burger toppings such as bacon, jalapeños, or green pepper to really “beef” it up.
  • Use tator tots- You may use tator tots instead of French fries if you prefer them.
  • Use different spices- Feel free to add your own spices when cooking the ground beef. I prefer more mild flavors but if you are looking to spice things up try adding a little cayenne pepper or chili powder!

Storage

  • This casserole is delicious the next day! However, the french fries may become soggy after sitting overnight.
  •  Store any leftovers in an air-tight container. The just reheat them in a microwave prior to eating and consume within 2-3 days.
  • You may also reheat this dish in the oven to bring the crisp back to the French fries.

What sides would pair well with this french fry casserole?

  • One of the great things about this recipe is that it can function as an all-in-one meal when you don’t feel like fixing any additional sides.
  • I recommend serving this with a simple side salad or green beans.

Top Tip

  • This dish is best fresh out of the oven! This will ensure that the fries are crispy.
