Pepper Steak & Gravy

June 20, 2024

Craving a hearty meal that’s fast, simple, and delicious? This Pepper Steak & Gravy recipe is one of the best new recipes to add to your weekly meal planning list. A thin cut of meat creates the best cooked steak. Way better than Chinese take-out! I’ve made this pepper steak stir fry so many times, and I’ve yet to alter the recipe at all. The hardest part of this main course is being patient and not eating it all before sharing with your family!

Why You’ll Love This Simple Pepper Steak Dish

  • Not only are the ingredients easy to find at the local grocery store, but they won’t break the bank, either. This means that you can create a hearty and comfort food recipe without costing a ton of money!
  • Slice the meat nice and thin so that a little bit goes a long way! This is the key to creating tender and juicy strips of beef that can feed the whole family with ease.

Ingredients List

  • Top sirloin steak – Make sure that it’s thinly sliced.

  • Bell peppers – These need to be thinly sliced as well to be the same texture as the beef. You can use red bell peppers, green, or yellow.

  • Yellow onion – Thinly slice your onion. You could use white onion as well.

  • Butter – I use salted butter for cooking.

  • All-purpose seasoning – For flavor.

  • Garlic powder – For taste.

  • Onion powder – For taste.

  • Black pepper – For flavor.

  • Olive oil – Coconut oil would work, too.

  • Beef broth – To help make the gravy.

  • All- purpose flour- The thickening agent used to make the gravy.

How to make Pepper Steak & Gravy

In a large mixing bowl add the steak slices and olive oil, toss until well combined. Season with all-purpose seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder and pepper then toss to coat each piece with seasoning.

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add 3 tablespoons of butter and allow it to melt. Then add bell pepper and onions and stir to mix with the butter. Sauté the vegetables until they start to soften and turn brown along the edges. Then move them to one side of the skillet and add the steak to the opposite side.

veggies and steak

Allow the steak to sear for 4-5 minutes and then mix it with the vegetables and finish browning the steak being sure to get a good sear on all sides. It should take around 10-12 minutes to fully cook depending on the thickness of the strips.

Add 2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet and allow it to melt. Sprinkle in 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and mix it with the meat and veggies. Pour in beef broth and stir until the gravy thickens. Reduce heat to low and allow gravy to simmer for 5-10 minutes. Serve over a bed of rice or mashed potatoes and enjoy!

Variations

  • Flank Steak – This is another type of meat that can be used in place of the sirloin. Technically, any cut of beef would work as long as you thinly slice it. Round steak would work also.
  • Brown sugar- Adding a little bit of sugar can go a long way in terms of flavor!
  • Cornstarch – If you want to make a thicker gravy, you can always add a cornstarch slurry to the dish.
  • Brown gravy mix – To save some time, you can use a sauce packet to make the gravy easier.
  • Red pepper flakes – If you’re a fan of heat, you can use red pepper flakes or even hot oil to add some spice!

Storage

  • Once you make this easy pepper steak, save the leftovers for later to enjoy again. Let the steak and veggie mixture cool to room temperature, then store it in an airtight container in the fridge.
  • For the best flavor, reheat and eat within 2-3 days. You can also freeze this simple recipe by adding it to a freezer-safe container. Make sure that you label it with the date so that you know when you added it.

What pairs well with this pepper steak recipe?

  • Almost anything pairs with this easy pepper steak recipe! You can make white rice, brown rice, or even pair it with a side of green beans or green salad.

Do I have to use thinner steaks?

  • Yes, for the cook time to be accurate, thin steaks are a must. That way, everything cooks easily and quickly, with no wait time. Also, the thinner cuts of meat help the meat be more tender.
