This Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese is my favorite way to eat sloppy Joe filling! This recipe features a delicious homemade sloppy Joe mixture placed between a traditional grilled cheese sandwich! This recipe is a busy night staple and something that I make often because the taste is awesome and they can be made quickly!
Ingredients
- Ground beef
- Yellow onion
- Tomato sauce
- Minced Garlic
- Ketchup
- Yellow mustard
- Beef bouillon powder
- Brown sugar
- Salt & pepper
- American cheese slices
- Texas toast bread- best bread for this style sandwich!
How to make sloppy Joe grilled cheese sandwiches
In a large skillet over medium-high heat add the chopped onion and ground beef. Season with beef bouillon powder, salt and pepper. Cook until no pink is visible within the meat, add minced garlic and cook for 30-45 seconds then drain off the excess grease.
Add tomato sauce, ketchup, yellow mustard, and brown sugar. Stir until well combined and bring to a simmer over low-medium heat.
In a separate skillet over medium heat, coat one side of each bread slice with a thin layer of mayo and place that side down in the skillet. Place a slice of American cheese on top of the slice of bread and add a serving of the sloppy joe filling. Then add another slice of cheese on top of the mixture and place a toasted piece of bread on top. Toast until golden brown then serve & enjoy!
Variations
- Quicker route- You may use canned sloppy Joe mixture if you are in a pinch for time!
- Extra Veggies- Add some chopped green bell pepper for an extra dose of flavor!
- Spice it up- Add a little chili powder to the meat mixture to give it some heat!
- Use butter- You may also butter the bread prior to toasting if you don’t like mayo!
Storage
- Store any leftover meat mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consume within 2-3 days.
- For best results, do not make these sandwiches ahead of time because the bread will become soggy and inedible.
What sides pair well with cheesy sloppy joes?
- I always serve this with French fries, toter tots or chips and dip if I am really in a crunch for time.
